FREE: WEEK 1 OF 12

Try Week 1 of The Paruresis Cure Program

This is the real first week of the program: the lesson, this week’s goals and the journal prompts. No sign-up needed. If it helps, the next 11 weeks pick up right where this leaves off.

Week 1: Understand Your Shy Bladder

Welcome! Shy bladder (paruresis) is common. The International Paruresis Association estimates it affects around 7% of people. It isn’t a character flaw or a lack of willpower. It’s your body’s stress response: when you feel watched, rushed or judged, the muscles that need to relax for urine to flow tighten instead.

The good news is that this response can be retrained. The approach most recommended by doctors and therapists is cognitive behavioral therapy with graduated exposure: practicing in situations that are only a little harder than you’re comfortable with, step by step, until your body learns it’s safe to relax. That’s exactly what this program will guide you through over the next 12 weeks.

This week is about understanding where you are now and where you want to be. You’ll take a baseline check, build your personal ‘exposure ladder,’ and set your vision for the next three months.

Safety first: if you have trouble urinating even when you’re completely alone, have pain or burning, or can’t urinate at all, please see a doctor before continuing. This program is self-help education, not medical treatment.

This week’s goals

  • Complete the Shy Bladder Confidence Check (baseline)
  • Write your exposure ladder: list 8–10 restroom situations from easiest to hardest
  • Drink normally (don’t restrict fluids) on at least 4 days this week
  • Read the safety note and, if anything applies to you, book a doctor’s appointment
  • Tell yourself one kind sentence about your shy bladder each day

In the program, you check these off as you go and earn points toward graduation.

Journal prompts

  1. How does shy bladder affect your life right now? Be specific: places, people, plans.
  2. Imagine it’s 3 months from now and shy bladder rarely bothers you. What are you doing that you avoid today?
  3. Write your exposure ladder here, from 1 (easiest) to 10 (hardest).

In the program, your answers are saved in a private journal you can look back on as you progress.
